If you were to take a sewing machine apart, you will find many individually interesting parts that come together to make even the simplest of stitches. All sewing machines start off with an electric motor; this is what runs all of the other gears, belts and cranks. A drive belt connects the drive wheel to the motor. The drive wheel is used to rotate the upper drive shaft. This is very important element since the upper drive shaft winds the crank that causes the needle bar to move up and down. A tightening arm lowers with every movement of that crank so that the fabric can move easily through as it is being stitched. The tread sits at the top of the machine in a spool. It runs through the tightening arm to a mechanism called the tension disc assembly. The thread is then tied to the needle. Using other parts of the sewing machine, the thread goes in and out of the fabric to create a stitch.
